How does High Impact sport effect our bodies?

When we run or participate in high imapct sport, we engage our core muscles. So in order to do this well, we should have a reasonably strong core or we may sustain injury. There may be a weakness as a result of previous injury, poor posture or pregnancies.

The core is the pelvis and the lumbar spine to the hips and the muscles and soft tissue controlling with the diaphragm for breathing at the top and the pelvic floor supporting at the bottom. If the core is weak, then the pelvic floor muscles work too hard to compensate for that lack of support as the foot impacts. If the muscles are working too hard then they become very taut in a negative way, the same as any taut band of muscle you might feel in your body. The effect is worse the higher the impact / the more the mileage / and the less the muscles are released or stretched.

How does EVB Sport help during high impact sport?

EVB Sport provides support to the perineum / pelvic floor and across the core thus reinforcing the core muscles.

There is a force created with EVB that is far greater than any other sports garment. The direction of the force is important in supporting the muscles and this encourages the correct position of the pelvis.

Is there a need to wear added Pelvic support?

All women to wear added pelvic floor support when running or even fast walking and in any other form of impact exercise.

This is whether without any symptoms or if there are problems with bladder or bowel leakage or pelvic organ prolapse. There is simply no reason to wait to see what happens – prevention in my field is far, far better than cure.

How does the support work?

EVB Sports Shorts provide firm non -elastic support to the pelvic girdle, lower abdomen and lower back, and a lifting up effect to the perineum and pelvic floor. The effect of this support optimises pelvic floor, lower abdominal and back muscle activation through increased mechanical advantage of the muscles in their shortened position, increased proprioception of the muscles and compression of the pelvic girdle joints.

How does High Impact Sport effect the internal pelvic organs

The pelvic organs are suspended within the pelvis by ligaments. High-impact activities such as running create strong downward forces on the pelvic organs. One role of the core is to create a hugging in and up effect, stabilising the pelvic organs (so they don’t bounce up and down as much with each step).

How does EVB Sport help support the internal organs?

The direction of the force in the EVB Sport active wear mimics the pelvic floor muscles thus creating a hugging type effect and reducing the intra-abdominal pressure. Since the EVB’s help to support and activate the core, they are likely to reduce the risk of stress incontinence in the short term, but also they are likely to prevent issues like pelvic organ prolapse in the long term. Independent testing from the Royal College of Surgeons shows that 71% of participants experienced a reduction in impact on the pelvic floor muscles.

Are EVB Sports products good for Sacroiliac Joint Pain or pelvic girdle pain

The non-elastic support of the EVBs stabilises the pelvic girdle joints and reduces shearing forces in the pelvic joints including the sacroiliac joints, and therefore use of them may ease certain types back and pelvic pain caused by instability.

So how do the EVB sports shorts differ from other products on the market?

Most other shorts have an elasticated waist and provide light support to the core and upper abdominals. The EVB’s support is much firmer and non-elastic. The support is very strong and centred around the pelvis, the perineum (and pelvic floor) and lower abdomen. The EVB shorts therefore increase the function of the core and also the pelvic girdle and pelvic floor, reducing the risk of incontinence, prolapse and lumbopelvic pain.

9 out of 10 women prefer EVB Sports shorts compared to generic sports brand in terms of support. Tests carried out by School of Nursing and Midwifery Trinity College Dublin 2016.

9 out 10 women prefer EVB Sport in terms of confidence when tested against generic sports brand. Tests carried out by Trinity College Dublin 2016.

Why do you recommend women wear EVB’s when exercising?

In order to exercise, we should have a reasonably strong core or we may sustain injury. Many women may have a weakness because of previous injury, poor posture or pregnancies. The core is the pelvis and the lumbar spine to the hips and the muscles and soft tissue controlling with the diaphragm for breathing at the top and the pelvic floor supporting at the bottom. If your core is weak then the pelvic floor muscles work too hard to compensate for that lack of support as the foot impacts. If the muscles are working too hard then they become very taut in a negative way, the same as any taut band of muscle you might feel in your body. The effect is worse the higher the impact or the more the mileage and the less the muscles are released or stretched. EVB provide support to the perineum / pelvic floor and across the core thus reinforcing the core muscles. The direction of this force is important in supporting the muscles and encouraging the optimum position of the pelvis this in turn reduces the risk of long-term damage.

Will EVBs help with prolapse?

Yes, Women who have prolapse have found the perineal support excellent when exercising and women with symptoms of dragging or pain have also found the lift in perineal position very helpful in getting through a day even when it is just about activities of daily living. Our clinical partners recommend EVB’s as an option across any urogynecology or colorectal patients. Research shows that only 25% of women post-partum have normal pelvic organ support. Bouncing up and down on a hard surface causes an impact that is 3 times your body weight! So for a 10-stone person, the impact transmission rate is approx 30 stone on your body. EVB sportswear absorbs the impact and aligns the pelvis in the correct position reducing risk of long-term damage and improving performance.

Can I wear EVB’s every day or will it cause my muscles to become lazy?

EVB’s can be worn daily and will not cause your muscles to become lazy, they will support your organs. They will stop you from actively overbracing your muscles as you try to support the organs yourself or in response to your symptoms. This will, in turn, stop negative tension build up from the bracing. The EVB’s then facilitate the correct action for you as a reminder of what it is that you should be doing yourself. This is in contrast to causing the muscles to become weak.

“The shorts when worn facilitate the drawing in of the abdomen and the lifting up of the pelvic floor helping you to support your core. They are facilitating and helping you to learn. They are not doing the work for you. They are not making you lazy.”

Will EVB Sports activewear stop my leakage problem.

Independent tests from Royal College of Surgeons found that 71% of those tested using a pad test that their issue was significantly reduced. In independent tests from Dublin City University 80% of the testees reported their leakage issue was eliminated or significantly reduced. If you suffer bladder leakage or similar we would advise a consultation with your GP and or women’s health physiotherapist. They will recommend the best course of action to get you back to full health. Many women believe their muscles are weak and there is nothing they can do. Many women believe kegel exercises are the only course of action available to them. There are many reasons why a woman is experiencing light bladder leakage/ prolapse, lower back pain etc from hypertonic pelvic floor muscles (too tense) to weak pelvic floor muscles to hypermobility to name but a few. A women’s health physiotherapist can guide you around the education and provide you with a personalised plan to get you back to exercise and keep you training for longer.
